On Friday night at Upper Dublin High School, Souderton Area diver Ozzie Moyer had his finest performance ever to earn a trip back to the state championships.

The Big Red junior scored a 528.55 to win the silver medal at the District One Class AAA Diving Championships at a packed Upper Dublin Natatorium.

“It feels pretty good — just getting back there is what really matters,” Moyer said smiling, speaking of the state championships in Lewisburg in three weeks. “This was the best meet I’ve ever had, and I still can do better. My first three dives weren’t as good as they could have been.”

Moyer still easily won the silver for the third year in a row, with T.J. Schenkel — last year’s gold medalist — earning the bronze with a 475.05. Freshman Ian Forlini of William Tennent surprised just about everybody in attendance by winning the gold medal, with a pool-record score of 535.25.

Moyer had great semifinal and final rounds to clinch a spot on the medal stand.

“My last six dives were pretty good,” he said. “I had a few rocky hurdles, but I was able to save some of the dives.”

Moyer will once again be joined by teammate Tyler Wenzel, another junior, who placed seventh with a 439.80. North Penn’s A.J. Russo just missed the state cut, finishing eighth with a 414.70.

Moyer got familiar with the boards at Upper Dublin just this past weekend, competing there in an AAU meet.

“I like this pool, I like the boards,” he said. “The boards are a little bit harder to get used to, but I like this pool a lot.”

Moyer is headed to another familiar pool at Bucknell University, where Forlini will be making his first states appearance.

“I hoped to (sneak up on a few people tonight). Going into it, people would think ‘oh he’s only a freshman,’ but I tried to make my mark on this place, and set myself up for later,” he said.

The District One Class AAA Girls Diving Championships will be held Saturday at Upper Dublin, at 10:30 a.m.
