Although parts of Montgomery County saw upwards of 16 inches of snow this week, Lower Moreland Public Works Director Steve Woerner said his township made out pretty well.

“It was a lot more than we anticipated but we were able to get through it,” he said Friday.

Although the majority of the main roads are cleared, Woerner said he and his crew, that have been working since 6 a.m. Wednesday, will be salting and cindering side roads that have a thick layer of ice.

“The biggest problem for us was the middle part when the rain changed to ice because it all froze up quickly,” he said.

Although the roads were slick, Woerner said there were only a few minor accidents to report.

Aside from a portion of Welsh Road that was closed because of a fallen tree, no roads were closed during the storm.

But the heavy snow did leave a few hundred residents in the Parkside Avenue area without power, but Woerner said, all power was restored as of Friday.

Like other area municipalities, Woerner said he and his crews always have trouble when residents park on the roads.

“It’s a big issue for us in certain sections,” he said. “People always think it’s better to be on the street.”

But to make sure plowing went as smoothly as possible, the director knocked on doors to make sure as many vehicles as possible were moved into driveways.

“Now we’ve just got a lot of clean up,” he said.
