Lower Moreland Man Sentenced for Odometer Fraud

A 43-year-old Lower Moreland man was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison and more than $4 million in fines for his role in a used car odometer fraud case.

Yakov Babchinetskiy of Longview Drive, an unlicensed used-car wholesaler, pleaded guilty to conspiring with several others to “roll back” the odometers on high-mileage vehicles in an attempt to receive more from buyers than the vehicles were worth, according to court records. Between 2002 and 2005, Babchinetskiy and Edvard Khakhan, another used car wholesaler, operated under the business names Sunfire Auto Wholesale, Legend Auto Sales, RAP Enterprises, Papelats, Y&O Auto Sales and coolcars4U, Riverton Motors, Century Quality Used Cars, A+ Auto Sales, 5-Star Auto, OV World Trading Corp., Clarindon Auto Center and Bereg Inc. Khakhan remains a fugitive, authorities said.
