A chemical spill that spread the smell of natural gas to area communities has been linked to an Abington business where a snow removal accident caused the spill.

The Associated Press reports that Abington Fire Marshal Kenneth Clark told them that a gallon of what is believed to be mercaptan, the agent that give natural gas its disinctive odor.

Clark also says that the substance is not dangerous but can be smelled in surrounding towns and is only exacerbated by the strong  winds.

The AP reports that area fire companies and utility companies received plenty of calls today reporting the odor.

The Fire Marshall also urged that the chemical spill is not endangering anyone.
