Mayor James Hawkes of Hatboro vetoed a ordinance that was to have created a commission on human relations.

The commission on human relations in the borough would have hard complaints of bias based on someones race, sex and sexual orientation. The state which has a commission does not cover sexual orientation.

The borough council approved the commission on human relations ordinance last month, last week, Mayor Hawkes vetoed the ordinance.

Hawkes believes that this is not a issue that is in the jurisdiction of his small borough but is under the jurisdiction of the state.

The mayor has also voiced concerns that the proposed commission could open Hatboro up to litigation.

The ordinance is similar to one in Philadelphia and Doylestown.

The issue is gaining more media attention after a passionate meeting was held this past Tuesday.

The Hatboro Borough Council will try to override Mayor James Hawkes veto early next week.
