A trash compactor fire, at the Gloria Dei Manor Retirement Community located on Welsh Road in Lower Moreland, filled the building with smoke and forced residents from their apartments.

Authorities said that a fire in the buildings trash compactor at the independent living retirement community began shortly before 1:00 a.m. and was extinguished fairly quickly.

“What started the fire could not be determined,” said Huntingdon Valley Deputy Fire Chief Bob Schadegg.

The fire which caused no major damage or injuries but smoke filled the five-story building.

Residents were forced to leave their apartments and were evacuated to the buildings stairwells which was deemed more safe due to outside temperatures struggling to reach 20 degrees.

Schadegg said that fire crews from Bryn Athyn, Abington and Hatboro assisted the Huntingdon Valley Fire Company with ventilating the smoke-filled building.
